Getting Social

Writer's picture: Emily HEmily H

The more I try to get clients to unplug, the more I find myself plugging in to stay up to date with the latest research, trends, tweets, etc. We used to talk about work/life balance. Now I think gears are changing to plugged/unplugged balance.

As much as I love having information on just about any topic at the touch of a button, I remember how much simpler life was without it.

When I was in high school we had paper, pens, and a T85 calculator to text our friends during class. We had land lines with a cord long enough for our parents to trace our calls all the way to the bathroom. And my nutrition and fitness knowledge came from television advertisements, my mother's Jane Fonda Step Aerobics tape, Cosmopolitan magazine articles, and the one chapter covered in health class.

So am I glad we as a society are more informed? Yes!

We are now more concious of our health than ever before, and I believe that is a good thing. Where I see the downfall is the amount of time we have to spend sorting through the research, trends, and tweets to find the pea sized nugget of wisdom that we were looking for in the first place.

Fitness and health professionals across the board are trying to help clients find the relevant information faster and more efficiently so they can find more balance in their plugged/unplugged lives. A great option to try is a RD On-Demand service, which offers text messaging, video counseling, and social media groups to help with accountability and provide evidenced based advice on the plethora of nutrition and fitness advice floating around the world wide web!
