Confession: I started the Southwest Michigan Fitness page honestly for myself. Very selfish, I know… But I hope that I’m not the only one out there in Google Land that has been looking for something like this. My husband often tells me I am very different from everyone else since I like to work out and try new workouts all the time. Here is my time to prove to him wrong! And that is one of my favorite things to do in this life!!
The fact is, I do like working out and pushing new limits and trying crazy workouts that get comments from other people like, “I could NEVER do that,” or “You’re crazy,” or “Maybe when I’m in better shape I’ll try a class with you.” But that’s the thing - You can do that, we are all a little bit crazy, and you have to start somewhere.
I hope that this website is a place for people to go that opens their outlook on all of the possibilities that are out there, right in your neighborhood. A place to get out of your comfort zone and try something crazy once in a while.
The law of diminishing returns is not a new concept by any means and it was originally used to discuss economics and profits and blah, blah, blah.. When we think about it from an exercise standpoint though it is saying that the more energy we put in (i.e. exercising) while keeping everything else the same (i.e same workouts, same routines, same clothing, etc) the less yield you will eventually see. Your body adapts to what you are doing!
When you did your first ‘Couch Potato to 5k’ you noticed huge gains. In energy, in body shape, in weight, in how you even felt emotionally. But when you are on that runner’s high and you continue to train for 5k after 5k after 5k your body adapts. And although you see little improvements here and there, nothing is nearly as great as that original 5k accomplishment. It is the one that we will always remember. The one that we frame our race day picture and proudly show off our swag from.
This is where you have a choice: You can decide you really like 5ks and continue down that road, you can decide that the small gains just aren’t worth it anymore and give up, OR you can push yourself out of your comfort zone and TRY something new! You did it before when you ran that first 5k, I promise you can do it again. You have nothing to lose* and everything to gain!
Head over to www.facebook.com/swmifit and find your next adventure!
*To be fair, you may lose: a small amount of time out of your day, your neat and put together appearance, some dignity - but not much!, friends if you drag them along with you - Honestly, were any of those things that important in the first place??
